Out of print book. A reference for anyone interested in spectroscopy in general and history in particular. State of the art book with detailed reference's list. A must have!




Herbig Spectroscopic astrophysics - contribution of Otto Struve
Georges H. Herbig
Very interesting compilation of article to get an overview of astrophysics in early twentieth century. Articles can also be found on Abstract Data Services but they are all followed by an update of the knowledge in the 1960's.

While this book is getting old and some would prefere "Spectral Classification" from Richard Gray, James Kaler book on spectral classification is of easier access for amateurs. One of the top book to have in your personal library.

A recent and complete book on spectral classification. It superseeds somehow Jaschek & Jaschek book on the same subject. One of the top book to have in your personal library.

One of the top book to have in your personal library. Graduate level with lot of figures/spectra and exemples.





Emerson Interpreting Astronomical Spectra

While a little bit old, this book contains soe very interesting references. Superseeded by David Grays "stellar photosphere" book.

A new and very detailed book on all emission line stars (Wolf-Rayet, Be, T Tauri...). Includes several tables with key targets for our spectrographs. An excellent book.

NASA/CNRS monographs (by spectral types)

In 1980's, NASA & CNRS published a monograph series on nonthermal phenomena in stellar atmospheres. Those make an excellent overview of the science knowledge of the stars at that time. Introduction is translated in french.

John Percy wrote several article in Sky & Telescope. This book is an excellent recent overview of variable stars with key tables listing targets for your spectrograph. A top book to own in your personal library.




Cooper Getting the measure of the stars
W.A. Cooper & E.N. Walker
The book is focused on photometry as amateurs were doing very few spectroscopy at that time. The book goes through the HR diagram and highlight where amateur can contribute - still the case today.
